Alumni Nate Hultman

Prof. Hult­man is cur­rent­ly on leave from the Uni­ver­si­ty. He is serv­ing as Deputy Asso­ciate Direc­tor for Ener­gy & Cli­mate Change in the White House Coun­cil on Envi­ron­men­tal Qual­i­ty. After this gov­ern­ment ser­vice, he will return to the School of Pub­lic Pol­i­cy and the Joint Glob­al Change Research Institute.

Prof. Hult­man is Direc­tor of Envi­ron­men­tal Pol­i­cy pro­gram at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mary­land School of Pub­lic Pol­i­cy, and teach­es cours­es on cli­mate change, ener­gy pol­i­cy, and glob­al envi­ron­men­tal prob­lems. He is also Asso­ciate Direc­tor of the Joint Glob­al Change Research Insti­tute, a col­lab­o­ra­tion between the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mary­land and the Pacif­ic North­west Nation­al Lab­o­ra­to­ry. His research focus­es on ener­gy tech­nol­o­gy tran­si­tions in emerg­ing economies; clean tech­nol­o­gy inno­va­tion; inter­na­tion­al cli­mate pol­i­cy; and pri­vate sec­tor deci­sions to under­take low-car­bon invest­ments. Cur­rent research projects focus on ener­gy and cli­mate poli­cies in Brazil, India, South Korea, South Africa, Swe­den, and the US. He has par­tic­i­pat­ed in the UN cli­mate process since the Kyoto meet­ing, and is a con­tribut­ing author to the IPCC Fifth Assess­ment Report and Spe­cial Report on Renew­able Ener­gy. Until Feb 2014, Prof. Hult­man was also a Non­res­i­dent Senior Fel­low at the Brook­ings Insti­tu­tion, Pro­gram in Glob­al Econ­o­my and Development

From 2006–2007, Hult­man was a Vis­it­ing Fel­low at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Oxford, affil­i­at­ed with the Insti­tute for Sci­ence & Soci­ety and the Envi­ron­men­tal Change Insti­tute. He was pre­vi­ous­ly assis­tant pro­fes­sor in the School of For­eign Ser­vice, George­town Uni­ver­si­ty. A for­mer Ful­bright Fel­low and NASA Earth Sys­tems Sci­ence Fel­low in cli­mate sci­ences, Dr. Hult­man has also con­duct­ed research at Lawrence Berke­ley Nation­al Lab­o­ra­to­ry and God­dard Space Flight Cen­ter. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Ener­gy & Resources from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Cal­i­for­nia, Berke­ley and a B.A. in Physics from Car­leton College.
